Survivor Support!

Survivor Support! will be hosting their second event this Saturday at the HIVE.

Topic:

“Keeping Me In My Place: Violence, Abuse, Oppression, The Legal System, The Social Service Industry, and the American Family.”

This workshop will explore sexual abuse and violence in the family along with abuse and violence in US history, and the relationship between violence, the legal system and the social service industry.

I went to their first event “Searching for Angela Shelton” and I was very impressed! They did a great job setting up the event and had refreshments and a Q&A session afterwards. People’s ages who attended ranged from their teens into their sixties. It was a very comfortable and inviting space making it easy for everyone to talk and share their experiences.  They also had an awesome table set up for info including: setting up a womyn’s health collective, zines regarding consent and the feminine hygiene industry, as well as hotlines and counseling services of the triad.

Survior Support! is working towards:

  • to create a space for the community to confront, discuss, heal and organize
  • to bring folks from different backgrounds, identities and communities together in dialogue about the systemic reasons for all forms of sexual violence
  • to raise community awareness that sexual abuse is a community problem that is not going away without community action
  • to explore the role of stories and speaking in confronting sexual violence
  • to educate people about sexual violence
  • to create safe places
  • to connect and contribute to a grassroots, broad-based movement across lines of gender, race, class, and ability to end sexual abuse in our community within our lifetimes

Survivor Support! is an open group so if you are interested in joining or would just like to stop by, please come out :)

Dude!

So, I was walking to class this morning and I had one ear piece in listening to some music and a cup of coffee in my hand. Then I hear from this kid walking by me say “dude, that test totally raped me! ….really? You’re going to compare how bad you did on a test to rape? Yes, let’s do that. Because the test in which you obviously didn’t prepare well enough for, is just like getting raped. Sitting in your seat for no more than an hour and a half answering challenging questions is just like minutes/hours/days/weeks/months/years of feeling: confused, embarrassed, traumatized, depressed, and suicidal. Taking a hard test is just like rape. Nope. I don’t think I can agree on that one. Last time I failed a test, I didn’t feel like I lost a piece of me nor had serious long-term mental and/or physical health effects. Rape is socially seen as not that big of a deal because that person usually “asked for it” and “they’ll get over it”. It just angers me as to how little of an issue rape is for some people to say and think shit like that. It was just another saying to him. Well, victims of sexual violence don’t “ask for it”, but you did by not studying enough. Hope you failed!

Life In A Gay Rock Band

Tuesday April 21ist:

jonginoli

“Jon Ginoli is the lead singer of Pansy Division, both widely regarded as being both the first openly gay rock band, and as being pioneers in the queercore musical movement which gave a musical voice and home to many queer individuals across the country beginning in the early 90s. From their inception in 1991, Pansy Division blazed a trail for queer musicians here and abroad by using their catchy music and in-your-face lyrics to adress gay issues in a frank, honest, and at times downright funny manner, and after almost twenty years, nine albums and 907 gigs (thus far!), 2009 sees Jon and Pansy Division having one of their busiest years yet, with the release of Jon’s new book “Deflowered: My Life in Pansy Division”, the DVD release of the PD documentary “Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band”, and the release of Pansy Division’s new album “That’s So Gay”.

To promote these new releases, Jon is coming to the MarVell Event Center in Durham, North Carolina to read from his book “Deflowered”, perform an accoustic set (which will include songs off of the new album), and show a screening of the documentary “Pansy Division: Life In A Gay Rock Band”. A Q & A session will also be offered after the screening. Regardless of whether you’re gay, straight, or anywhere outside or in between, this is sure to be a fun and informative event with good tunes and good times, so come on out!”                                                                                                         -anonymous
